In Pottawattamie County, the biggest aquatic ecosystem also happens to be America’s longest river, the Missouri. This river has helped shape the land and its floodplain, and seasonal flooding has provided the nutrients that made this area ideal for farming.
The richness of Iowa soils also means that the aquatic ecosystems found here are also rich in natural plant and animal life. One example of this is the Blackbird Marsh.

- Wetlands (including fens and seeps)
- Ponds
- Seasonal pools
- Lakes

- Creeks (including seasonal streams)
- Rivers
- Springs
